Lava


This picturesque place at an altitude of 2,350 mts., the small village of Lava remains hidden in mists and clouds. It is situated on the old trade route to Bhutan, at a distance of 34 km. from Kalimpong.

There is a monastery of Bhutanese origin and a Nature Interpretation Centre in Lava. There is also a quaint little bazaar. Surrounded by virgin pine forests, Lava is popular for Nature explorations and bird watching. It is also the starting point for treks to the Neora Valley National Park, a storehouse of flora and fauna, leading to the 3,152-m. high Rachela trijunction. Here the borders of Bhutan, Sikkim and West Bengal converge. One also gets a panoramic view of the Chola Range.



Lolegaon or Kaffer


The lonely hamlet of Lolegaon is 59 km. away from Kalimpong, and 25 km. from Lava. A recent favourite on the tourism map, Lolegaon is locally known as Kaffer. Lolegaon stands along a lovely forest drive. It has a heritage forest and an observation point called Jhandi Dara, for viewing the snow peaks of the Singalila Range. According to some, it offers an even better view of the sunrise than Tiger Hill.

Lava

From lava one can take a walk to Tiffin Dara in the midst of the virgin forest. From Tiffin Dara, an excellent view of the Kanchenjunga and the sunrise can be had.
On the way to Lava about 5 kilometers at an altitude of 8000 ft. approx is small forest village called Rishap. It boasts of having small forest resorts from where beautiful and breathtaking view can be taken of the majestic Kanchenjunga.


Lolegaon


Lolegaon stands along a lovely forest drive. It has a heritage forest and an observation point called Jhandi Dara,
It has a heritage forest with canopy walks and it is commonly known as the "Bird Watcher's Paradise". Jhandi Dara commands the panoramic view of the whole stretch of the Kanchenjunga from the Singalila range to the Rachela Range.



Lava :

Near the bus stand at Lava, there is the Forest Rest House. Accommodation in Tents is also available, though booking has to be done before hand with the West Bengal Forest Development Corporation. A number of Private Hotels have also come up around the Lava Bazaar.

Behind the main bus stand is the Forest Rest House. Accommodation in Tents is also available, though booking has to be done before hand with the West Bengal Forest Development Corporation. Down the hill is the Darjeeling Tourism Kaffer Tourist Lodge. There are also a number of Private Hotels.



Lava & Lolegaon



  Altitude:   7,200 ft. (Lava), 5,500ft.(Lolegaon)
  Best Season:   April to mid June and mid Sept. to Dec.
  Clothing Required:   Light Woolen and tropicals in summer (umbrellas and raincoat are useful) and heavy woolens in winter.
  Languages Spoken:   Hindi , Gorkha , Nepali.

From Calcutta -

By Air :

  A 50 minutes hop . Daily Flights are operated by Indian Airlines/Jet Airways to Bagdogra (Siliguri), which is the nearest Airport. For more details please contact the nearest Airlines office.

By Train :

   Overnight journey. The famous Darjeeling Mail besides other trains operate on daily basis to the nearest railhead at New Jalpaiguri (Siliguri). You may also opt to travel from New Jalpaiguri by the quaint little "Toy Train" which winds its way up the hills to Darjeeling.

By Road :

   A fleet of luxury State/Private buses run over night to Siliguri.

From New Delhi -

By Air :

  2 hr. flight. Indian Airlines and Jet Airways operate tri-weekley and daily flights to Bagdogra (siliguri) respectively.

By Train :

   A 24 hr. journey. The Prestigious Rajdhani Express beside other fast trains run on a regular basis to New Jalpaiguri , the nearest Railhead.

By road, Lava is a two-hour journey from Kalimpong. Buses ply regularly, and jeeps are also available, though somewhat infrequently.

Daily bus trips to Lolegaon or Kaffer are available from Kalimpong. Jeeps and cars can also be hired from private operators.
