Situated at an altitude of 1,250 meters, Kalimpong enjoys the best climatein the region. Kalimpong's main claim to fame is its flora, particularly Orchids,infinite in its variety and hues. Kalimpong is quiet, much quieter than Darjeeling.One can savour the beauty and bounty of nature here.

Cradled between the Deolo and Durpin Dara Hills, Kalimpong is an ideal health resort. Its height is about 1250 - 1600 m. for the town area, while the countryside averages 1600 m. Rachela, at 3,152 m. is the highest spot. Kalimpong's area of houses a population of around 40,000, comprising Nepalese, Bhutias and Lepchas. Kalimpong is famous for its tradition of simple and sincere hospitality.

The name, Kalimpong, has three different origins. One, it means the place where the local tribesmen gathered to organize field sports, second, it takes it's name from the Bhutanese King's Minister's stronghold and thirdly, it is named after Kaulim, a fibrous plant found in abundance in this region.


Deolo Hill

Overlooking the town of Kalimpong this is another, hill feature, the top of which is the highest point in Kalimpong at an altitude of 5,500 ft. Like the Durpin Dara this hilltop also offers a good view of the surrounding hills. Two big reservoirs here are the source of water supply to the town of Kalimpong below.

The Golf course

On the Durpin Dara hill is nestled a beautiful golf course with gently rolling slopes.

From Calcutta -

By Air :

  A 50 minutes hop . Daily Flights are operated by Indian Airlines / Jet Airways to Bagdogra (Siliguri), which is the nearest Airport. For more details please contact the nearest Airlines office.

By Train :

   Overnight journey. The famous Darjeeling Mail besides other trains operate on daily basis to the nearest railhead at New Jalpaiguri (Siliguri). You may also opt to travel from New Jalpaiguri by the quaint little "Toy Train" which winds its way up the hills to Darjeeling.

By Road :

   A fleet of luxury State/Private buses run over night to Siliguri. From Siliguri buses, jeeps and private taxis are available to Kalimpong.

From New Delhi -

By Air :

  2 hr. flight. Indian Airlines and Jet Airways operate tri-weekley and daily flights to Bagdogra (siliguri) respectively.

By Train :

   A 24 hr. journey. The Prestigious Rajdhani Express beside other fast trains run on a regular basis to New Jalpaiguri , the nearest Railhead.
